Last day, had to get up early again. Flight departed 07:35. The Taxi driver I ordered last night didn’t really get the big box with a bike thing, but the car was large enough for everything to fit inside. At the airport, I put a bunch of post cards into the mailbox, which I wrote last night.
I then checked in my luggage including the bike. At the airport, I borrowed a marker from the counter to highlight the directions and handling grips of the box.
Time to hand over my bike into the airline’s custody. Let’s hope for the best.
After carefully arranging the bike on that conveyor belt, the door to the left opened and some guy told me to bring it in through there.
I had a good flight, as I booked some premium economy tickets for the extra luggage which also included sitting in the front row with extra space, and getting food and beverages. When I got the food accompanied by this tiny knife and fork, I had trouble handling it after eating with just a spork for 4 weeks. It might take some time to re-adjust to civilisation.
Changing planes in Oslo included running across the whole airport to the international terminal. I made it just in time. They already where in the process of closing the counter. I was somewhat worried that my bike didn’t make the transfer.
Back at Berlin Tegel. I was eagerly waiting for the bike to show up. When some girl from a Sweden trip got her unpacked bike handed over by some airport guy, I expected mine to be handed to me like this too. Far from it. After a while, it actually came out at the conveyor belt with all the other bags. Maybe packing it wasn’t such a good idea after all.
The packaging seemed to have suffered a bit, but there was no obvious damage, and it is a rather stable bike.
I got out of the airport like this, and got a taxi home.
I arrived around 13:30 (compare with the image of the first post). Took me half a day to get back. It’s hard to describe how surreal that felt, after having started 30 days ago.
Time to get some rest. I’ll go to the office tomorrow, as my vacation is officially over.
Sooner, or later, there will be one or two more blog post containing detailed statistics, my packaging list, and some notes of what I would optimise for a similar trip in the future. Hope you enjoyed reading this series so far. Feel free to leave me comment or get in touch.
