Stage 3: Klockow – Schwaan, 2015-08-05

Today was much less exhausting than yesterday. Temperatures around 28 degree Celsius and a light breeze provided good riding conditions. For comparison, yesterday I measured an average speed of 18.4 km/h at an average pulse of 148. Today, I achieved 18.9 km/h at 128 heart beats per minute. Also no signs of dehydration (liquid intake ~7.5 litres).

I had a late start around 12:30. I do need better routines – took me 2 hours to get out of the sleeping bag and back on the road – without even having had breakfast.

After 25 km, I reached Waren, where I  went to the city to do some shopping. First, I went to the supermarket and bought food for the day and tomorrow’s breakfast.

The Next stop was a bike shop to find a solution for my uncomfortable bike handles. Since yesterday, the nerves of both hands are irritated which manifests in deaf fingers. I already adjusted the grip angle this morning, but it didn’t feel better. So I ended up buying some gel padded bike gloves. Speaking of bodily wear out, my knee indicated some minor discomfort with the current situation too. That’s why I also got some Kinesiology tape at the pharmacy. Tomorrow I’ll try to externally bring my patella into the right position.

Before leaving Waren, I enjoyed an Asia noodle box and a cold Club Mate at the pier.

In Güstrow near the castle.

In Güstrow, the R7 bike trail was redirected by a series of signs, which lead me onto a rather large detour. At some point the signs stopped, and I wasn’t sure whether there will be another one. So I looked for the closest camp site near the original trail and took the fastest Google Maps route. Yeah right, Google Maps… and it should not disappointment my expectations formed during the last days. This time I had to pass a 3 km mud trail, of which I have no pictures of, since a swarm of blood thirsty insects was hunting me. At least I got this shot nearby.

Es gibt Reis… (a German thing)
Today I used the cooking gear for the first time this trip. Too tired to write more about equipment in this post.

Tomorrow,  I will reach Rostock and take a ferry to Denmark. I am thinking about replacing my handlebar with a straight one with different grips and bar ends in Rostock. The way ahead is just too long to suffer the current one.

Beautiful pix! My wife Amy, a physical therapist, was impressed, and says “beware carpel tunnel from leaning on your wrists all the time.” Hope your joints hold out!

Thanks CJ. I think what I currently suffer from is not carpal tunnel syndrome, but the related Guyon’s tunnel syndrome. I hope it gets better, otherwise I might even return early.
